Fixed Speed vs. Variable Speed Industrial Screw Air Compressor
This 11kw 15 hp rotary screw air compressor is a fixed speed type. Whatâ€™s the difference with the PM VSD screw air compressor? Must a variable frequency air compressor be more energy efficient than a power frequency air compressor?
(1) Working principles are different
The former uses a star-delta method to start at 5-8 times the rated current. It has a high impact on the grid. Tends to cause grid instability. The latter starts by means of a PID regulator inside the frequency inverter. So it can start smoothly.
(2) The VSD air compressor is usually more energy-saving
The former has a higher no-load rate. Because of idling, it wastes more energy. Besides, it takes longer to stop. But VSD air compressors can eliminate idling. It can increase efficiency by an average of 10%. So it can avoid no-load energy waste.
In actual production, our air requirements are constantly changing. For fixed-speed air compressors, only meets this change by frequent loading /unloading. If the customer requires a pressure of 6 bar, the compressor will be set to load at 6.5 bar. At 7.5 bar, it will unload. So it will run continuously between 6.5 and 7.5 bar. The average pressure is 7 bar. That is, itâ€™s 1 bar over. Therefore naturally results in more energy waste.
But for the VSD air compressor, it does not need to set the loading and unloading pressures. And it can stabilize the pressure within Â±0.1 bar. This means that the pressure is basically stable at 6.5 bar. Or even lower. So it significantly reduces the operating pressure of the system. Finally realizes lower energy consumption.
(3) At full load, fixed speed type is more energy efficient than VSD type air compressor
There are limits to the specific power of a screw air compressorâ€™s first-class energy efficiency standard. For example, 22kw/7bar screw compressor: Power frequency air compressor is 6.5. And VSD air compressor is 6.9,. There is a 6.15% difference between the two. For 11kw 15 hp/7bar rotary screw air compressor: Fixed speed air compressor is 6.8. And variable speed air compressor is 7.5. There is a 10.29% difference between the two.
We measure the specific power values. For the former, calculate it at 100% of the full load. And for the latter, calculate it at 100%, 70%, and 40% of the full load. In addition, the weighting factors are 25%, 50%, and 25% respectively.
Assume that the air compressor is operating at full load. The latter compressor also has to bear the power consumption of the inverter (5-8%). The former airend can choose 100% of the load as the optimum number of revolutions. But the VSD airend is different. For the sake of the load 70% weighting factor, it is possible to choose 70% of the load. Therefore, if run at full load, the former is more energy efficient than the latter.
